Being sandwiched between two giant superpowers isn’t always a comfortable position! Mongolia has been a democratic country since its democratic (and peaceful) revolution of 1990. It is constantly negotiating with its two larger and more developed neighbors, receiving help from them, but also trying to guard its sovereignty (its ability to rule itself without outside influence).

Mongolia is divided into 21 aimags (provinces) and each province is divided into soums (districts). You can see the aimags on the map below.
